Looking forward, 2010 promises to be a unforgettable year. I have extended my contract with Vans and will be producing all surf content this year. Fall 2009

Fall 2009 ended with a flurry of swells and picture perfect conditions in Santa Cruz for the Coldwater Classic. As the storms of the Pacific Ocean begin to heat up and winter kicks into full gear, I will be making my annual pilgrammage to the North Shore. Subpar conditions have ruled the beaches this week so it is good time to reflect on the past few months.

Prior to coming home from Trestles in September I produced this video for Vans on Patrick Gudauskas. Pat and the G Bros are truly well rounded people that excel at more than just surfing. In this video we take a look at Pat's day at home in San Clemente.

Then it was off to the Pacific Northwest into Bigfoot Country for a Vans trip. Dylan Graves, Kalani Robb, Teddy Navarro, Staff Photographer Dave Nelson, and myself blazed through California, Oregon, and Washington on the 101 and had an incredible adventure along the way.
Here is a video I produced for Vans about our journey Northbound.

And finally the Coldwater Classic was a huge success with a massive swell running and summer time weather. I had the opportunity to be a production manager for O'Neill international this year and help with the production of their documentary based around a 5 contest series they put on in 2009. Red Bull Videos from the Hurley Pro 2009

Lower Trestles was the sight of the 2009 Hurley Pro where aussie Mick Fanning dominated the field. A mix of power and consistency in the final was too much to handle for an exhausted Dane Reynolds. Dane and Mick were the standouts of the event, Mick's precision and Dane's explosive free surf antics, were destined to meet in the final. In the end Mick Fanning took home the richest prize in surfing history and gained some serious momentum going into the world title race in France. Check out these videos I did for Red Bull.

Red Bull team rider, Mick Fanning, dominated the 2009 Hurley Pro. Taking out Dane Reynolds in the final and destroying Kelly Slater in the semi finals, check out Mick's road to the top.

Lowers Trestles WCT Contest 2009

The Hurley Pro at Trestles has invaded Southern California. The past week I have been working with San Clemente's finest, the Gudauskas Brothers, and Hurley Pro Wildcard, Kai Barger, producing profile videos for Surfline and Vans.

Last night I attended Surfer Poll with the Red Bull team and had a blast cruising on the Double Decker bus to the oscars of the surf world. Check out the video from the evening on redbullsurfing.com next week.

Puerto Escondido 09

Puerto Escondido Beachbreak:
The beachbreak at Playa Zicatela is one of the heaviest in the world. In the morning, the offshore winds blow strong until midday. A typical day in Puerto requires surfing the beachbreak in the morning and then heading to one of the secret points around Puerto.

Bungalows Zicatela:
The Bungalows Zicatela, where a lot of surfers that come to Puerto stay. Nice rooms, a pool, and perfect waves all within walking distance.

The Mexican Flag:
This is a shot of a flag that stands on the hill above Puerto.

Boat Ride To Secret Wave:
The boat ride to a secret wave was amazing. The boat cruised through these swamps to get to the spot. The waves at this spot were amazing. A perfect sand bottom point comparable to the Gold Coast of Australia.

Last Day In Puerto:
Our final morning was perfect. Some amazing waves to end the trip.

Vans Skate Team Shoot At Bucky Lasek's House

Vans invited me to help film a bonus feature for the release of the new Dogtown and The Z Boys DVD. We arrived at Bucky's house around 11 and walked up to the top of the hill in his backyard overlooking the San Diego valley. What we found at the top of the hill was a concrete vert bowl that Bucky designed himself, possibly the largest concrete bowl in the world. Standing inside of the bowl felt like you were walking in a crater on the moon to give some perspective to the size of this bowl.

In the morning Bucky, Rob Lorifice, Josh Borden, and Josh Stafford had a warm-up session. Bucky put on a display of his vert antics, blasting on every corner of the bowl. After doing some interviews we took a lunch break. When the day was finally cooling down and the sun began to set a few more skaters showed up to session at the bowl. PLG, Chris Miller, Cookie, and a few others began blasting and the session was on. Chris Miller was so impressive with his effortless style and confidence in at the bowl.PLG was blowing up and had a local kid with him, teaching him how to skate the bowl.I could not imagine how stoked the kid must have been, getting to have a private session with his hero at Bucky's house. Bucky was a really down to earth individual and it was great having the opportunity to meet him. You can see the video from this session in a few months in the Bonus section of the release of the new Dogtown and the Z Boys DVD.

Jared Abe from Vans and myself on top of the bowl. It is hard to get a perspective of the size and dimensions of the bowl these guys are skating. I could only equate the size of this bowl to a huge wave at Mavericks. Only the most experienced skaters could skate that bowl. It is a one of a kind sight.

This is a shot of the evening session. A beautiful sunset and some insane skating to end the day. It was a one of a kind experience and I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity.

Southern California trip August 09 Part 1

Trip to Southern California August 19, 2009

This week I am in Southern California filming for Vans and the release of the new Dogtown and Z Boys DVD. We will be filming a feature for the bonus DVD with members of the Dogtown cast and Vans skate teamriders. Check back for more pics and video from the session.

Driving through Big Sur there is a waterfall on the beach at Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park. With a transparent blue lagoon and waterfall that endlessly flows onto the sand, there is no place more peaceful.

The classic Vans logo pasted on a wall in the headquarters. A phrase and style that stays true to the brand and sports it represents. Vans is the one and only original skate shoe.

The entrance to Vans headquarters. The design and decor model a skateboard ramp throughout the building. Many of the walls are covered with wood from a skateboard ramp and the main hallway in this picture is a tribute and display to Vans history.

The skate ramp and wherehouse at Vans. Lunchtime for employees is well spent. Walking around the office people get around with skateboards. It is a refreshing sight.

Walking through the Vans headquarters is a time warp in skate and surf culture. Through every twist and turn, the walls are plastered with various collections of art. Many of these artists have put their designs on Vans classic shoes.

Vans European Vacation 09

Europe holds a special place in my heart. From the topless sand beaches of France to the shady streets of the red light district of Amsterdam, Europe is always an adventure.


This past week I was cruising up and down the coast of Spain to the southern beaches of
France.  Accompanied by Vans teamriders Joel Tudor and Alex Knost,
captain fin's Mitch Abshere, and an Italian friend of Joel's, Danielle.  It was a
trip of a lifetime thanks to Vans and Scott Sisamis.




Upon arrival into the airport in Spain, we were greeted by some
familiar faces.  Vans Europe and the community of Playa Salinas
took us immediately to the beach for some 3 - 4 foot peaks.



We spent 2 days surfing and cruising around Playa Salinas, Spain.
Upon checking the forecast we saw more favorable conditions about
5 hours away by car in Biarritz, France.  In the evening we drove all
night and arrived to our hotel on the sand at around 2 in the morning.

After a night on the town we opened our eyes to 3 foot perfection on
the grand plage of Biarritz.  Over the next 2 days our sessions were
epic.  Sunshine, 75 degree water and air, and light offshores winds
blessed us.  Joel, Alex, Mitch, and Danielle were
on fire, everyone putting on a display of grace and style that only
these guys possess.

After 2 days of amazing surf in France we ended our stay with some
pizza and one of the most spectacular sunsets I have ever seen.
Then we set sail to our final destination on our European
extravaganza, the infamous city of Amsterdam.




We arrived in Amsterdam in the evening and got immediately into a taxi
to head to the city center.  As we got into our taxi the
driver informed us that it was her 3rd day driving a cab.  She
proceeded to get lost for about 45 minutes until we finally had to
force her drop us off before we ended spending the night in the cab.

We finally walked to our hotel and got settled for the next day of
adventure.  Amsterdam with Joel was a time I will never forget.  
We managed to squeak in some sightseeing,The Anne Frank
House and Van Gogh museum. 

And now back to reality.  The trip was a great success and the video
to come is going to be amazing.  Thanks to Scott Sisamis and the Vans
surf team for such a great trip.

The US Open is a one of kind experience.  For 10 days, Huntington 
Beach becomes the epicenter of the surf industry, bad tattoos, 
bikini's that have no business being legal, and more often than not 
weak unpredictable surf.

This year had all of these elements, except for one.  This years event 
conincided with the biggest south swell I have ever witnessed in 
Southern California.  Along with a $100,000 payday for first prize, 
the largest prize money in surfing history, the finest surfing talent 
competed in the event for the first time in over 5 years.  Kelly 
Slater, Andy Irons, and Mick Fanning made their much anticipated 
return to the shores of surf city and neither the surf or surfing 
dissapointed.  Watching a set break beyond the pier, jetski assist at 
Hb, Kelly Slater dominate, and local Brett Simpson were among the 
highlights.

This week on Fuel TV's The Daily Habit on 6/18/09 check out some of my footage from Hawaii and a recent adventure to Australia of Nate Yeomans. Pro surfer, Nate Yeomans drops in to talk about his charge toward the WCT and the recent 6.0 Lowers Pro. On 7/1/09 you can view some of my footage of Gavin Beschen from the North Shore of Oahu, he will be the featured athlete on Fuel TV's The Daily Habit. Next up will be Nathan Fletcher, he will be appearing on an upcoming episode of the Fuel TV's The Daily Habit.

I spent the past week in Southern California at the NSSA Nationals Championships held at Lower Trestles. Lowers served up pint sized conditions perfect for all of the groms. Kolohe Andino was the man to beat, taking out numerous titles including the Open Mens and the Airshow. Lakey Peterson took down the heavily contested Open Womens Final and pulled a legitimate Air, the first ever landed by a female in NSSA competition history. The month of June marks the official beginning of summer and so far it has been one to remember. Southern hemisphere swells have kicked into gear, brewing up a healthy batch of storms for the entire west coast. Starting off with the Arnette Pro Jr., which went off on June 6 - 7 in Newport Beach, California. Working alongside the lovely, Erica Hosseini, for grindtv.com, I produced a video about the event and the daily highlight reels for the Action Sports Group. April 2009 Update

The 2009 spring surf season has kicked into full swing in preparation for summer. This week I am down in Southern California covering the 2009 Nike 6.0 Lowers WQS 6 star prime from April 29th – May 2nd. This contest marks the 1st 6 star prime held on the mainland this year and is improved rating to 6 star prime from a 4 star in 2008.

I will be working alongside ASG events marketing coordinator, Sean Nielsen, and his talented team to deliver the best coverage of this event in year’s. Forecast for the event looks promising and should be a great event with some amazing surfing. I will be providing coverage for Surfing Magazine’s daily highlight reels, which get distributed to a wide range of media outlets. Also, I will be producing final day’s action for Fuel TV’s Weekly Update Show, Grind TV’s extended coverage of the event, and Vans podcasts from the event.

I recently returned from a trip down under to Tasmania and Western Australia. It was an amazing experience having the opportunity to travel to Australia. Hanging out with the Gudauskas Brothers, Timmy Reyes, Jordy Smith, Alek Parker, and the rest of the Vans and O’Neill team was an experience I won’t forget. Footage from this trip will be featured on vanssurf.com, a Jordy Smith profile on redbull.com, and various segments that will be featured on espn.com. Also, footage from this trip will be featured in the upcoming O’Neill Wetsuit Clinic due to be released in June.

After the Lowers contest I will be leaving on a trip to Mexico along with Transworld Surf staff photographer. This trip will be a great mix of talented surfer’s from Hawaii, Florida, and California. Stay tuned to see this footage in upcoming segments on espn.com, surfline.com, and Nelly’s Magic Moments.

Nelly’s Magic Moments is a new venture this year between myself and Dave Nelson featured on transworld’s new and improved website, transworldsurf.com. We will attempt to show the lifestyle of a surf photographer and the ups and downs of this challenging lifestyle and job.
